Chapter Eight

Hours later and thirty minutes before my date was due to arrive, I called Ida Belle. “Are you ready to fess up and tell me what’s in that journal?”

“You might want to ask me about the dagger first.”

“What about it?”

“Didn’t notice anything unusual about it?”

“No. Looked like an antique but I’m more of a guns and grenades kind of girl.”

“It’s called a stiletto.”

“Like the shoe?” Of course like the shoe. It was a sign. A message.

“Yes, Fortune, like the shoe.”

“So what do you think it means?”

“Considering it was attached to a flyer with your name on it, I’d say we have a reason to worry.”

“That’s what I was afraid of.” I knew the flyer had my picture smackdab in the middle which meant Casey had undoubtedly returned to Sinful to track a stiletto killer. “Stupid boy didn’t realize that the stiletto killer used a shoe, not a knife.”

“I’m pretty sure he knew,” Gertie said. “Sick humor.”

“You saw the flyer?” Ida Belle sounded guarded.

“The important parts. A friend of mine snatched it up before I could read it.”

“She did indeed,” Gertie said. “We need to examine all the evidence before we share our suspicions.”

“Gertie, do I need to remind you that this stiletto mess concerns me?”

“Not at all, dear. We’re just looking out for you.”

“I haven’t had time to read all of Casey’s entries but from what I can tell, he wrote about himself more than anyone else.”

“Bull,” I said, sounding like Gertie. “What’s in the journal?”

“So far the journal isn’t the problem.”

“Then what is?”

“Reward offered in the Stiletto Scandal,” she said.

“Stiletto scandal?” I scoffed. “Great.”

“It’s about you, Fortune.”

“I got that part,” I said sarcastically.

“You asked.”

She had a point. “What does it say?”

“You know. The usual.”

“Read the flyer to me or I’ll drive over there and read it myself.”

“Why bother with nasty details. The gist of it is an arm’s dealer pretending to be a law enforcement agent is now offering up a sizable reward for your whereabouts. A phone number and name are listed.”

“Want me to call it and send the guy on a wild goose chase?” Gertie asked.

“No. Whoever is behind this could trace the number.”

“May not matter if this guy knows Casey was on the hunt here in Sinful.”

True. “Anything else?” I tucked away my fear by reminding myself that the man who had possession of such a flyer was now checked in down at Sinful’s morgue.

“Not yet,” Ida Belle said. “Haven’t had a chance to really go over the intel yet. On the way home, we stopped by Walter’s and picked up some spray paint. Gertie’s fender looks pretty good but it needs time to dry. Hope Carter doesn’t drop by on his way home from Mudbug.”

“What about the dents?” I didn’t think they could repair Gertie’s car. Then again, Marabelle and Mini Monster had pissed off the wrong women. Pleading the fifth instead of risking ‘no contest’ seemed like a fair decision all things considered.

They had offered to pay for the bike.

“The dents are still there, just not as noticeable.
